While the beaches of the western coast of India are immensely popular among tourists across the globe, the eastern coast of India also hosts some beautiful beaches. If you think only Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala have the most amazing beaches in India, it’s time to check out the eastern coast. Though the beaches of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu have gained much popularity in recent times, some beaches of Odisha are currently the centre of major tourist attraction.

Here’s a list of the most popular beaches of Odisha that you need to add to your bucket list now. Though not as popular as their western counterparts, these beaches are nonetheless beautiful and exciting!

1. Gopalpur-On-Sea

This virgin beach surrounded with Coconut and Indian Tamarisk trees is popular among tourists across the country and abroad. Enjoy the sea, sun bath, sunrise and sunset or hit the waters. You can also enjoy boating in the backwaters. There are many resorts and hotels of all budgets in and around the beach area for a pleasing stay.

Visit the remains of the jetty (6 km) of the ancient kings of Kalinga who traded pearls and commerce to Java, Bali and Sumatra; Dhabaleshwar Shiva Temple (12 km), Aryapalli beach (16 km), Taratarini Temple (30 km), Cashew Factory (2 km) from Gopalpur.

Distance from Bhubaneshwar – 184 km; Nearest city is Brahmapur (16 km).

2. Chandipur

It is a mesmerising coastal hamlet surrounded with Indian Tamarisk, Pandanus and Cashew trees. This tranquil and less crowded beach with soft tawny sand serves as a serene getaway for tourists. The shallow sea bed stretching for about 5 km, sees an exciting hide-and-seek of the sea during tides. On low tides when the sea goes afar, you can enjoy car rides across the beach which is one of the major attractions of Chandipur beach in Odisha. Enjoy breathtaking sunrise and moonrise; watch playful crabs crawling across the beach; collect scattered shells and visit nearby places.

You should not miss the confluence point known as Balaramgadi (3 km) that marks the confluence of Buribalam River and the sea. Also visit the Interim Training Centre which is famous for space research and missile launching. Other places of attraction are Balasore, Nilgiri, Panchlingeshwar, Budha Balanga, Remuna, Similipal National Park and Bhitarkanika.

3. Puri

Though famous as a pilgrim site, Puri is also a very popular beach destination in India. It is equally liked by pilgrims and tourists. The extensive beach stretching through 7 km remains busy throughout day and night. Walking through the golden sand and spotting numerous kinds of beautiful shells and conchs is a great experience. The blue waters coupled with white foam make it a pleasing sea experience. The sunrise, sunset and moonrise offer charming sightings. Shops, camel rides and horse ridings are available on the beach. Outside the beach premises there are lip-smacking sea food stalls.

The infamous Jagannath Temple and ‘Maasir Bari’ (open to only Hindus) are major pilgrim attractions. Other places to visit in and around Puri include Dhauli, Pipli, the artist village of Raghurajpur and Bhubaneshwar.

4. Chandrabhaga

Situated at a distance of 3 km from Konark, Chandrabhaga beach is an immensely beautiful and long beach in Odisha. Presided by shops and eateries, the beach square is now developed into a tourist friendly centre. Every year in February, local fest is organized on a big open ground beside the beach. With its mythological association with Lord Krishna and his son Shamba, Chandrabhaga is often visited by pilgrims who are set on a pilgrimage to Puri. The virgin beach of Chandrabhaga is really long and walking on the sands is an amazing experience here other than hitting the waves. There are some hotels and resorts

The most famous attractions near Chandrabhaga is the ancient Sun Temple of Konark (3 km) and Puri ( km). You may also visit Kurum village (11 km) which preserves a wonderful amalgamation of Buddhism and Hinduism of the 7th-8th centuries. This village also finds mention in the book of travels of the historical Chinese scholar and traveller, Hiuen Tsang or Xuanzang. The archaeological remains can be seen at the museum beside UGME school in Kurum.

5. Gahirmatha

It is the largest natural turtle nesting centre in the world and the only Turtle Sanctuary in Odisha. Surrounded with Indian Tamarisk trees, Gahirmatha is a quiet, serene virgin beach. The captivating sunrise and sunset, blue waters, greenery, tawny sand and huge numbers of Olive Ridley Turtles, Hawksbill Turtles, Leather backed Turtles that arrive from Australia through the Indian Ocean make Gahirmatha beach a unique experience.

Bhitarkanika National Park and Kalibhanjan Reserve Forest are the two major attractions near Gahirmatha.
